Picture two: Annalee Devine pictured beside her CBA about the Battle of Aughrim which took place On 12th July (equivalent to 25th July in the modern calendar) 1691, approximately 35,000 troops from eight European nations made up the opposing forces of William of Orange and King James II who went head-to-head just outside Aughrim village as part of the wider struggle for the throne of England. It resulted in the highest loss of life in any single battle on Irish soil.
Picture three: Clódagh Bracken pictured here beside her CBA on her great grand uncle Séan Robbins. Sean Robbins, born in Clara in 1892 took an active role in the fight for independence and was eventually O/C No. 2 Offaly Brigade of the IRA until the end of the Civil War, participating in many activities and engagements both in Offaly and elsewhere. Later settling in Birr, he made a name for himself as a hurler and footballer at both club and county level. While still an active player he was elected Chairman of the Offaly County Board, and in 1935 became the first Offaly man to be elected as Chairman of the Leinster Council. He was also an All Ireland referee, taking charge of several high profile games in Croke Park. Since 1960, the Offaly Senior Hurling trophy has been awarded in his honour.
Picture four: Szymon Kulakowski is pictured holding his CBA about his family’s experience during World War II including his great grand uncle minder during the Karyn massacre where the mass execution of Polish military officers by the Soviet Union occurred World War II. The discovery of the massacre precipitated the severance of diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the Polish government-in-exile in London.
Picture five: Genevieve Fleming is pictured here beside her CBA which focused on the bombing of the North Strand, Dublin by the Luftwaffe which resulted in the death of approximately 33 people. Her grandmother was living there at the time and Genevieve conducted an interview with her grandmother about her experiences of this.
Picture 6: Blanca Sarzynska is pictured beside her CBA which examined what the Great Famine (1845-1850) was like in Clara and Offaly. Her CBA also looked at the role played by Robert Goodbody during the Famine.
